De Quervain's Disease

De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, also known as de Quervain’s disease, is a painful condition affecting the tendons on the thumb side of the wrist. Let’s explore the specifics:

  1. Symptoms:

    • Pain near the Base of the Thumb: You’ll experience pain when turning your wrist, grasping objects, or making a fist.

    • Swelling near the Base of the Thumb.

    • Difficulty Moving the Thumb and Wrist during activities that involve grasping or pinching.

    • A “Sticking” or “Stop-and-Go” Sensation in the thumb during movement.

    • If left untreated, the pain may spread farther into the thumb or forearm.

  2. Causes and Risk Factors:

    • Chronic Overuse: Repeating specific hand motions day after day can irritate the tendons around the thumb.

    • Inflammatory Arthritis: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.

    • Direct Injury to the Wrist or Tendon: Scar tissue from injury can restrict tendon movement.

    • Fluid Retention: Hormonal changes during pregnancy.

  3. Diagnosis and Treatment:

    • Clinical Evaluation: Based on symptoms and physical examination.

    • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS): Assess nerve function.

    • Electromyography (EMG): Evaluate muscle activity.

    • Treatment Options:

      • Wrist Splints: Maintain a neutral wrist position.

      • Anti-Inflammatory Medications: Control pain and inflammation.

      • Physical Therapy: Improve strength and flexibility.

      • Corticosteroid Injections: Reduce inflammation.

      • Surgery (Carpal Tunnel Release): In severe cases.

  4. Prevention and Self-Care:

    • Ergonomics: Maintain proper wrist posture during work.

    • Take Frequent Breaks to rest and stretch your hands.

    • Avoid Repetitive Motions that strain the wrist.
