Tailbone Pain, Coccygodynia, Coccydynia

Coccygodynia, also known as coccydynia, coccalgia, coccygeal neuralgia, or tailbone pain, refers to symptoms of pain that occur in the region of the coccyx (tailbone). The coccyx is a triangular bone at the base of the spine, composed of 3 to 5 segments. While most cases resolve within weeks to months, chronic coccygeal pain can significantly impact quality of life. Let’s explore further:

  • Clinical Anatomy:

    • The coccyx serves as an attachment site for several muscles and ligaments.

    • It provides weight-bearing support during sitting and supports the anus.

    • Variations in coccyx morphology exist, classified into four types based on curvature and shape.

  • Causes:

    • Injury (falls, trauma), specific postures, or childbirth.

    • Increased stress while leaning back in a seated position.

    • Complex nature of coccygeal pain.

  • Symptoms:

    • Pain triggered by sitting or changing from sitting to standing.

    • Pain in the lower back, buttocks, and tailbone.

    • Difficulty with daily activities due to pain.

Remember that management can be challenging due to the complexity of coccygeal pain. Seek medical advice from Dr Chinmoy Roy at Rajarhat Pain Clinic Newtown, Kolkata if you experience persistent symptoms
